The Vienna Surface Tester (VST) consists of a sphere weighing 6.15kg and 20.4 cm in diameter that is dropped from varying heights between 5cm and > 80cm onto turf or sport surfaces to determine the mechanical properties of the surface. The internal electronics measure and record impact velocity,
Gmax, stiffness (spring rate) and energy restitution as well as penetration depth, resonance frequency and the E- modulus. At each location, about 15 measurements are performed by dropping the sphere from random heights on random spots to determine surface parameters under different loads and to evaluate the variability of the tested surface.
Data is stored on a formatted micro SD card in csv format. A colour LED bar indicates the status of measured data and assists the operator to cover the entire range of drop heights and number of measurements. The battery is a rechargeable 1000mAh LiPo for ~ 6 hours continuous use.
