RESEARCH & PUBLICATIONS

A research foundation.
A practical application.

Published methods and applied studies provide context for the measurements. Groundlytics translates that work into field testing and reporting.

ONGOING COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH

Contributing to
the next questions.

These projects remain underway. They sit alongside our commercial racecourse monitoring and are distinct from the published work below.

HKJC-FUNDED / ONGOING

Consistent Global Turf Ratings for a Global Sport: The First Step.

A University of Lancashire-led study funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Equine Welfare Research Foundation Limited, examining objective turf assessment across racing jurisdictions.

Groundlytics contributes field measurements, data management, mapping and technical reporting. The wider analysis is ongoing.

FEI-FUNDED / ONGOING

Eventing Cross-Country Going.

An FEI-funded collaboration with the University of Lancashire, considering cross-country ground response alongside rider assessments.

Groundlytics contributes surface measurements, maps, sector commentary and rider-feedback data. Findings remain under investigation.

Eventing protocols, racing performance context and the wider British Ground and Going study.

2023 / BIOMECHANICS

The Development of a Standardized Protocol for Quantifying Equestrian Eventing Cross-Country Ground

Research establishing a practical approach to objective eventing ground assessment, with instrument comparisons and rider feedback.

THE BRITISH GROUND AND GOING STUDY

Measurements
in a wider context.

The 15-month 2023–2024 project was led by researchers at Nottingham Trent University and the University of Central Lancashire, managed by the Horse Welfare Board and funded by the Racing Foundation.

The report considers going measurements alongside weather, soil, region and time-based going allowances, with input from clerks and trainers.

The 2024 racing paper examines associations between surface measurements and performance-based going. A relationship at meeting level does not automatically establish a lane-specific prediction or explain an individual race result.

HOW WE USE THE EVIDENCE

Keep the methods clear.
Keep the interpretation specific.

VST comparisons with the OBST inform particular models and protocols. Soil moisture and impact response provide complementary information; each instrument and outcome retains its own meaning.

International research and FEI-supported eventing work extend the practical questions being studied. The purpose is to build useful evidence around ground consistency, performance context and welfare-focused preparation.
